Washington made the contribution as a wedding gift for his publicist Howard Bragman, who confirmed the donation, saying:
“Chuck and I were very touched by his generosity and his support of this cause, and we expect many other high-profile contributions. He said [he] wishes us all the best and he supports the rights of others in our community to get married.” (Outsports)
Kudos to Washington for using his celebrity status to do some good. His publicist is certainly giving him good advice!
Donations are one thing, but if Washington is serious about his opposition to Prop 8 he should DO something, too. For example, he could do a traveling tour reaching out to undecided voters. We have very little time until the election to change people’s minds on marriage. Perhaps if they saw a public figure such as Washington so prominently change his mind on an important civil rights issue, they might open their hearts to the freedom to marry, as well.
He could also spearhead an education drive in the African-American community on LGBT issues. Or why doesn’t he attend one of EQCA’s Equality Awards? Consider it an invitation.
Words matter. But good deeds matter ever more.
