Candy company chooses closure over equality

Famous chocolate vendor See’s Candy chose to close one of its most prominent and historic outposts in Union Square, the heart of San Francisco, rather than comply with the city’s nondiscrimination requirements.

See’s Candy refuses to offer equal benefits to LGBT employees, which makes it ineligible to renew its lease from the city under San Francisco’s 1996 landmark equal benefits law. Originated and orchestrated by EQCA’s own Geoff Kors, it was one of the first ordinances of its kind, and inspired similar measures across the country.

I just spoke with a rep of See's Candy (800-895-7337, press 3, and ask to speak to someone about the closing of the Union Square store) who stated unequivocally that they were not evicted, that the SF Examiner article is wrong, and that See's provides full DPB, incl. health insurance. She stated the city was going to require further benefit changes that would in turn require union contract re-negotiation. Now, I don't know anything about union contracts, I'm not defending See's, but at least according to See's themselves, they're more than willing to explain that they willingly offer full DPB. Call them up and ask them yourself, if you have questions.

I am very sad to heard this news for many reasons. I have enjoyed See's candies and chocolates for many years. I choose to buy See's candies and chocolates more than any other. But with this news I am very disheartened. I will no longer patronize my local See's stores or any See's stores I see during my travels.

As with anything that is said, we have an obligation to check it out for ourselves.

I will be emailing See's to find out exactly what their position is. If their position is nondiscriminatory I will continue to happily buy their products. If it is discriminatory then they will lose my business and I will tell everyone I know that See's is for Haters.

Jordan, thank you for clarifying this.

Seriously EQCA, you shouldn't be spreading false rumors. Not only are you hurting an otherwise supportive business but you are hurting your own reputation.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. We are looking into the situation and are doing our best to provide you with accurate information.

To clarify, we are not calling for a boycott and never have.
